See what goes on behind the scenes at Woodland Park Zoo with a 90-minute guided tour. Your Real Close tour starts with a trip through the zoo’s award-winning African Savanna before heading behind the scenes to the commissary where the food for our more than 1,000 animals is stored and prepared. Think your pets at home eat a lot? Wait until you learn how much we prep each day for our gorillas and grizzlies! See where much of that food ultimately ends up with a visit to the Zoo Doo yard where our highly coveted, rich compost is created. Then enter the zoo’s greenhouse where horticulturists prepare tropical plants—including more than 900 orchids—used all around the zoo. Final stop on the tour includes a brief visit to the new Visayan warty pigs exhibit.  Guided tours include zoo admission and participants are welcome to explore the zoo on their own at the conclusion of the tour.

Real Close tours are offered Wednesdays through Sundays, 10:45 a.m.- 12:15 p.m., from June 20 through September 30, 2012.

Tours begin at the zoo’s South Plaza located just inside the South Entrance at N. 50th St. & Fremont Ave. N.

Non-member price: $37.75 adults, $21.50 children (ages 5 and up). Member price: $20.00 adults, $10 children (ages 5 and up). Military price: $20.00 adults, $10 children (ages 5 and up). For safety reasons, no children under 5 are permitted and 1 adult must accompany every 3 children. Cost includes admission to the zoo.

Space is limited; advance registration is recommended and can be taken up to 48 hours in advance. To register, visit

Real Close tours are part of “Pigs, Warts and All,” a celebration of the zoo’s new Visayan warty pigs and warthogs presented by U.S. Bank and The Seattle Times. Take a peek into the world of the critically endangered Visayan warty pigs, which boast spiky head tufts that resemble the hairdos of punk rockers. Enjoy warthogs, the wild pigs of the African savanna, which jumped to fame when the character warthog Pumbaa endeared itself to fans of Disney’s “The Lion King.”

Woodland Park Zoo hours through September 30: 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. daily.
