Making a Difference in Our Community

Explore the We Are Living Northwest Initiative

Thanks to your generosity, we’re igniting a passion for conservation across the Pacific Northwest. By supporting our campaign, you’ll preserve biodiversity throughout our lush region and drive local programs that increase empathy for animals and engage more people in conservation.

When you support the We Are Living Northwest initiative, you are investing in these key impacts and zoo transformations:

Key Impacts

Living Northwest Conservation Program

Restoring our local wildlife, fostering environmental resilience, and encouraging everyone to participate in conservation to safeguard our cherished community through our signature Living Northwest Conservation Program. We’re working together to preserve our region’s lush forests, rare carnivores, delicate wildflowers, and so much more.

Internship Program

We’re nurturing a new generation of environmental leaders, with a focus on young people from communities that are underrepresented in zoos and conservation careers. Launched in 2022 in partnership with the city’s Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP), this program invites college students of color and low-income students to explore their interests, develop their skills, build professional relationships, and learn about the field of wildlife conservation.

Community Nature Play Program

We’re increasing access to nature play and nature-based experiences—a powerful and proven way for young children to learn, develop, and connect to the outdoors—for Puget Sound children from racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse backgrounds. Developed in partnership with the Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA), this new early learning program will reach hundreds of local children each year at our Zoomazium, at ReWA Early Learning Centers, and at dozens of other Puget Sound organization whose educators receive our toolkit and training.

ZOO TRANSFORMATION

Discover, Recover and Coexist

We’re empowering local community members to discover nearby wildlife, recover the habitats we share, and coexist with animals and each other for a thriving Northwest.

Empathy Community Collaborative

We’re co-designing culturally responsive programs that build empathy for animals with youth and families from south Seattle, encouraging a lasting commitment to environmental stewardship by providing participants with a deep sense of ownership in program development through our Empathy Community Collaborative.

Completed

Living Northwest Trail

We’re featuring the Pacific Northwest’s native plants and animals, with a focus on conservation achievements and actions, showcasing the beauty of the Evergreen State and the actions each person can take to preserve it through our new Living Northwest Trail exhibit.
