Planning Our Future: Woodland Park Zoo Embarks on New Long-Range Facilities Plan
Community survey launching in July—help shape the future!

SEATTLE—Woodland Park Zoo is embarking on a new Long-Range Facilities Plan planning process with a vision to become the Northwest’s premier center for wildlife conservation, where people connect with animals and each other to make a difference.
This new Long-Range Facilities Plan will guide the physical development of the zoo for the next 20 years. This will be the zoo’s third Long-Range Plan in its 125-year history.
When completed, the plan will act as a flexible framework to ensure the zoo continues to be a must-see destination and can meet the current and future needs of animals, people and the environment to achieve the zoo’s mission.
“Woodland Park Zoo has been a leader in innovation throughout the zoo and aquarium world,” said Alejandro Grajal, President and CEO of Woodland Park Zoo. “This new 20-year Long-Range Facilities Plan is an opportunity to shape the zoo of the future and reflect the values of our community as we continue to be pioneers in wildlife and environmental conservation and animal welfare.”
Planning begins in June 2025 in partnership with the City of Seattle and Seattle Parks and Recreation and will continue through 2026.
“Parks and green spaces are at the heart of our Emerald City, and Woodland Park Zoo represents the excellent legacy and bright future that Seattle has to offer,” said AP Diaz, Superintendent, Seattle Parks and Recreation. “The City is excited to partner with the zoo on this new endeavor, helping it reach even higher sustainability goals by creating green infrastructure and practices that reduce the city’s impact on climate change.”
Your Voice is Needed!
In July 2025, Woodland Park Zoo will begin seeking input from the public to reflect the community’s values, needs and experiences in the zoo’s planning efforts.
A community survey will launch next month at zoo.org/plan to gather thoughts and ideas from the community. This feedback will help shape the future of the zoo!
