Art has always shaped our perception of nature, capturing its beauty and complexity. Today, as the natural world depends on us as much as we depend on it, art’s role in inspiring empathy and action is more crucial than ever.
In this lecture, Tim Flach explores how photography transcends traditional wildlife representation. Drawing from his acclaimed series—“Endangered,” “More Than Human,” and “Birds”—he highlights the individuality, personality and character of animals, using strategic anthropomorphism to evoke empathy and inspire environmental stewardship. Flach’s work draws on art history, utilizing colour theory and visual perception techniques like left gaze bias to create emotional resonance. By crafting powerful narratives, he challenges viewers to see animals not just as subjects but as sentient beings, deepening our connection to the natural world.
Through his lens, art becomes advocacy, urging us to rethink our relationship with nature.
