New Flamingle and Butterfly Garden starting May 23

A wave of pink and “flying flowers” coming to the zoo

A man with long hair and a beard smiles while holding a drink, with two flamingos close to him, one on each side. The background is lush greenery, suggesting an outdoor setting.

WHAT:
Summer is about to take flight at Woodland Park Zoo. Chilean flamingos are stepping out to mingle at the new Flamingle summer experience and butterflies are fluttering back in the returning Butterfly Garden. Both up-close experiences will begin Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day for an additional fee.

Flamingle

Step into a splash of pink paradise and mix and mingle with a flock of young Chilean flamingos. Be in the middle of the action at the zoo’s Alvord Terrace as these specially trained, social birds feed, groom and socialize. Flamingle is perfect for bird lovers and photo fans alike—selfies are encouraged! Cost: In addition to zoo admission or membership $29 per person, $23.20 members, free kids 2 and under.

Butterfly Garden

Walk into a kaleidoscope of colorful butterflies in the seasonal Butterfly Garden and be immersed in the magic of these delicate pollinators as they flutter through the aromatic blooming flowers. See how they emerge from their chrysalises in real time and get released to fly free in the garden. Cost: In addition to zoo admission or membership $3 per person, $2.40 members, free kids 2 and under.

Behind the Butterfly Garden is the Microsoft Pollinator Patio, a glorious garden complete with ideas and actions to take on behalf of native pollinators such as butterflies, hummingbirds, beetles and bees. It is open year-round and included in the price of admission. The interactive, multi-sensory exhibit is home to tree kangaroos, red pandas, kea, and a variety of reptiles, amphibians and fish species. The 12,000-square-foot building and 1-acre grounds opens a window into the communities leading conservation solutions in the mountain forests of Papua New Guinea, Nepal and here in the Pacific Northwest.
